[00:00:39] I want to talk to you about my book. Yay. I’ve been working on this. book. I have been dreaming about this moment and this book and this, even this podcast episode, talking about the book for years. And so I am really excited to [00:01:00] dive beneath the surface in this episode to really peel back the curtain and share what this process has been like for me as I dream of this book and bring it into being literally birth this creative endeavor.

[00:01:16] And it is very vulnerable to be talking about it. I have somewhat avoided this podcast episode because, or feared it, because it feels like doing something new for the first time in a very long time, and I do new things all the time, and I’ve been running Date Brazen for the last six years.

[00:01:38] I’ve been learning how to be a CEO and lead a team and serve my clients better. And like all those things feel like old hat now. And Writing a book and talking about a book and now sharing the book with the world is such a new thing. And so I have a lot of questions prepared because I didn’t want to totally go off the cuff because I really want you [00:02:00] to know what this process has been like.

[00:02:01] So you can, get to know me better in this process because you and me are. in this thing together for you and your love life. [00:05:54] And that I am ready to talk about this book. Let’s get into it. Okay, [00:06:00] first question. I’m going to go through these questions about my book writing process. When did you decide you wanted to write a book? Where were you? Did you have a photo of this place? Who was with you? Okay, I was starting Date Brazen.

[00:06:12] I think I was like two years into Date Brazen. I started Date Brazen in 2018. So it was I think I was like two years into Date Brazen. I started Date Brazen in 2018. So it was I was like a year in. I worked with this coach who introduced me to another coach named Rochelle Fredson. Rochelle Fredson is a book proposal coach and her whole job after exiting the traditional publishing workforce after 15 years of working in traditional publishing, she started her own company to help aspiring authors create book proposals that sell.

[00:06:44] And so I met Rochelle Fredson at this event that she was introduced to me. I sat right next to her. I fell in love with this woman. And she was just so magnetic to me and so powerful and so inspiring. I just sat [00:07:00] there at that table with other entrepreneurs who were hearing her talk about the publishing process and how to get a book deal and all these things and the self publishing, all these options.

[00:07:09] And I just remember looking up at her. I was sitting directly to her right. And I remember looking up at her and feeling. So sure that I needed to write a book, I had it on my heart to write a book. But at that point, I didn’t have the language to describe what I wanted, the tools to get what I wanted.

[00:07:30] I literally had no evidence around me that a book deal was even possible because I wasn’t in that arena, which is why I think that it’s a really important whatever you want to get yourself in spaces where people are having conversations. Where your dream is a reality already. That’s why I love my program, The Brazen Breakthrough.

[00:07:50] We do it in community. That, that propels you forward instead of keeping you stuck in a, I don’t know how to do this.

[00:08:06] Is it even possible? So that’s what first sparked me is like meeting Rochelle Fredson, talking to her. At the time I didn’t have the finances. to work with her, but when I did a year later, I took the leap and literally nothing in my business or life seemed like a book was inevitable except for what I felt inside my body.

[00:08:27] I don’t know if that makes sense, but like when I think of somebody who says, yeah, book is inevitable. I think of them already having 100, 000 followers on a social media account or like a huge podcast. I didn’t even have a podcast then. So it was such a. A leap, but my body knew that it was the right leap for me to pursue writing a book.

[00:08:49] And so we went, I worked with Rochelle Fredson in her program, Book Proposal Blueprint. Which is open right now, as a matter of fact, and I’m not paid to say that. I just love it so [00:09:00] much. So I started working with Rochelle. We started building the book proposal, which if you don’t know what a book proposal is, it’s a 90 page document.

[00:09:08] And by the way, this episode is messy because there is definitely construction happening outside of my window. And I was so turned on to record this episode right now that I was like, I just need to do it now. So if you hear construction, I apologize. But I digress. So basically we started working on the book proposal.

[00:09:28] I wrote this 90 page book proposal that was so beautiful and so good. And we started sending it out. I started sending it out to you. agents because I wanted to be traditionally published. So that means like self publishing is, you do it all yourself. And and then hybrid publishing is you do some of it yourself and some of it is with a publisher and then traditional publishing is you get a book deal and an advance probably in some amount, and then you go off and write your book and then [00:10:00] they do the rest.

[00:10:00] of the like printing of the book and all of that stuff. I wanted to be traditionally published. And so we went out and to get traditionally published as a non fiction author, it is different for fiction. You have to have, pretty much, you have to have a literary agent. So the first step was getting a literary agent.

[00:10:19] So we started, I started emailing literary agents and putting my name out there and Rochelle was so freaking helpful to this. She knows everybody and was able to guide me through the process. And so I got rejected. Again and again by agents who said things like this is one of the best proposals I’ve ever read, Bragg, and I don’t think Lilly has enough numbers.

[00:10:44] That’s what we heard again and again and again and again, and I got really discouraged because at the time what that means is basically an Nonfiction author is their job. My job is to sell the book now that I’ve [00:11:00] written it because books, can be difficult to can be challenging to sell at a large rate.

[00:11:08] Publishing houses are looking for nonfiction authors specifically who have a platform who that is like a built in audience to already buy the book, right? To prove concept for the book buying process. And I’m also, I’m, if you’re a book expert listening to this, you’re probably rolling your eyes.

[00:11:26] I’m not doing a great job at explaining this, but I just wanted my audience and I want you all y’all to know like what the deal is with all of this. Yeah. Really discouraged. I was down in the dumps. I at the time had about 1500 Instagram followers and a podcast and the podcast was, we were tracking about 150 to 200 listeners per episode, which if you are one of those one to 200 people, I am so fucking grateful for you for being here.

[00:11:56] If you are one of those thousand 1500 people on Instagram who was with me, I’m. [00:12:00] So freaking grateful to you. And I was really proud of those numbers and I got kept healing, hearing again and again, they weren’t going to lead to the book deal that, or a book deal at all. So Rochelle advised me to just go back and keep working on my platform, keep working on, my podcast.

[00:12:18] And that’s when I started getting on Tik TOK. And because I was working on my main character energy, which is permission. self trust and massive, messy, courageous action. To me, that’s my definition of main character energy. I started getting on Tik TOK and just fucking around. If you’ve listened to the podcast for a long time, June, 2022, I went viral for the first time on Tik TOK.

[00:12:39] It led to a big spike in followers. It led to this podcast being number four on the podcasting charts on the relationship chart. So three behind Glennon Doyle. And it was so exciting. And at that point I emailed Rochelle. I was like. Rochelle, there are 40, 000 people on TikTok who are now following me.

[00:12:57] The podcast is number four can we take the proposal back [00:13:00] out? She was like, yes, let’s go. Let’s, you do it. Go. She connected me to the most incredible agent in the world, Johanna Castillo, who works at Writer’s House. Johanna immediately emailed us back. It was amazing. And we got on a Zoom call and immediately hit it off.

[00:13:15] Johanna is this powerhouse. Who has had dozens and dozens of, was represented authors representing dozens and dozens of New York Times bestsellers and she’s Isabel Allende’s literary agent huge shit. Then, I got, I Took a picture of myself crying on the street in Brooklyn because I was so excited that she emailed back and then so excited that she signed on to be my agent.

[00:13:39] Then we took the book out to or Johanna took the book out to publishers to see if anybody was interested and we had a meeting. My first meeting was with Krishan Trotman at Legacy Lit, which is an imprint at Hachette. And Legacy Lit is this really special imprint that focuses on[00:14:00] social justice leaning books or books from authors that, we haven’t heard of before.

[00:14:05] It’s a really cool imprint and I’m so honored to be one of their authors now. A couple of Legacy Lit’s books include Made. M. A. I. D. The show that got, the book that got turned into the Netflix series. Cis Don’t Settle by Faith Jenkins. Grief is Love by Marissa Renee Lee. Get the Fuck Out of Your Own Way by M.

[00:14:27] J. Harris, just to name a few of Legacy Lit’s books. And so I met with Chris Sean, we hit it off and I ended up getting the news that I got. an offer and a book deal on the day that my clients from my mastermind were arriving to New York for our in person retreat. So it was like this really magical alignment.

[00:14:48] And and so that’s what started the process. I got the book deal in no, in October of 2022. And then I started writing in October of 2022 and I [00:15:00] finished writing in July or August of 2023, and then I, we did edits until very recently, December 2023. So it was a process. Next question. Where did I write my book?

[00:15:17] Okay, this is hilarious because I had the thought, thought not, thoughts not facts. I had the thought that I needed to upgrade my entire life. with stuff to write this book effectively. I had the thought I need a beautiful MacBook monitor. I need a better I need a better desk, which I ended up getting a better desk for my little office.

[00:15:40] But because my old one was falling apart, I wrote it till it fell apart. I digress. I wrote this book in my home office, which side note is also in my bedroom, right? Also in our bedroom. And we live in a Brooklyn apartment. I am making it work. And I sat here and wrote this [00:16:00] book imperfectly every single day.

[00:16:01] Sometimes I was laying in bed writing when it was like 10 p. m. And I just needed to get a chapter to my publisher. For edits. It was very intensive writing this book. What was the writing experience like? What was my writing process? Was it easy? Frustrating? Difficult? Did I have a playlist? Did I write a candle?

[00:16:20] Y’all, this book is not technically dedicated to this soundtrack but should be. I did shout it out in the acknowledgements. This book was written to the holiday soundtrack. 100%. I have listened so much so to the holiday soundtrack that it is on my Spotify wrapped forever. It, I listened to the holiday soundtrack to write this book every single moment, pretty much.

[00:16:46] And it got me through. It calmed me. It motivated me. Special shout out also to. The National Treasure soundtrack. Special shout out also to the Alias soundtrack, the iconic early 2000s TV show by BJ [00:17:00] Novak. Special shout out to the Born Identity soundtrack. Y’all, when I needed to bust out a chapter fast and I was feeling stuck, I would put on the Born Identity soundtrack.

[00:17:12] alias and National Treasure soundtrack and I’d be like, duh So it was iconic how those those soundtracks got me through. I couldn’t listen to anything with words, generally, because it would slow my writing down. And I learned that along the way. I also learned along the way, Cause this book is written from a big sister, best friend energy that I hope you feel on this podcast as well.

[00:17:36] And so I would go through periods of getting really stuck in shoulds and shame of an imposter syndrome. So especially at the beginning, I would get so stuck thinking I’ve got to sound good and I’ve got to sound smart and I’m not smart enough. I’m not educated enough. I’m not. I’m not read enough to write this book.

[00:17:57] That’s the thoughts that I would have sometimes, [00:18:00] y’all. And I ended up, when I had that fear, writing very pedantic sounding, coachy coach chapters. And I remember sending three of those chapters to my publisher. And being really proud of them because I had written a lot of pages and she got back to me and was like, Lily, this tone, we’re not, this is not what, your proposal was.

[00:18:24] And I recognize that when I wrote chapters that didn’t feel that felt to like, coachy and preachy that I was in fear about how I would come off. I was in fear about being myself and being more like silly or witty. And so this whole book was like a process of permission for me permission to know what I know, to be honest about what I know.

[00:18:52] To be direct and to own that I’m human writing a human book and that there will be things that I mess up or [00:19:00] miss and that’s got to be okay, right? And that process of accepting that was very vulnerable for me as somebody who’s a recovering perfectionist. It was really hard. Now, in terms of my writing, and I did it, I’m so proud of myself.

[00:19:15] In terms of my writing process, I got very type A about my writing. I would have a whole routine. So I wrote every single day and didn’t do much else besides coach my clients and write my book for about months. So last year I had a wedding. I got married to my husband, Chris. And after that wedding, I stopped selling in the business.

[00:19:38] I like just went hard on, on writing this book and serving my clients at the time. I got really I have to do this process. I would sit down. I would do a journaling exercise and do a gratitude journaling. And then I would do a belief plan journaling. Here’s what I plan to believe about myself in this book.

[00:19:54] And then I would read a few pages of Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird book. And then I would. [00:20:00] Sit down to my computer and I do two pages of just like brain dumping on the page, just like warming up my writing muscles and then I put the holiday soundtrack on and then I’d start writing and y’all, it was a lot.

[00:20:11] I did feel sometimes that I needed to ramp myself up to write this book because writing this book was so I’m Different than anything I’ve ever done and that was a really humbling truth because I thought I’ve done it all I’ve been doing this for five years at the time and so it was really humbling because I needed to learn a new skill and I wasn’t always good at it and it was also really.

[00:20:36] Like the highest high when I would write something that I loved and I would go and read it to Chris and I would, I think that’s the only person I really read anything to and at the beginning, I used to give my chapters to Chris to for him to read and just to make sure they were okay. I also just peeling back the curtain all the way.

[00:20:55] I was really in my fear imposter mode [00:21:00] sometimes. And that would show up for me in my head. Deeply anxious thoughts that sounded like my publisher is going to hate this book and they’re going to ask for the advance back. And I’m not going to be, I’m not going to have a book deal anymore because I’m not good at this.

[00:21:14] Like when I tell you that whatever anxious thoughts that you’re having about your dating life, however irrational or untrue you logically know they are. I just want to say I join you in being human with a human brain and that no matter where anybody is. in their life, whether you perceive them to be ahead of you or not, they are dealing with the same shit that you are.

[00:21:42] If you struggle with anxiety especially especially I can speak for myself, I am dealing with the same shit you are in your dating life, which is why I am so So uniquely qualified to help you move through it because the process of feeling my feelings, I had to do feeling my feelings work.

[00:21:57] I had to do self [00:22:00] compassion literally every single day. I had to lay on the floor to ground my nervous system and ground my body all the time. I got up and jumped around and shook my body every hour. Like it, it was such an intensive process. I also want to shout out my incredible editor who I got to meet and work with after Krishan and I worked on the first few chapters and the tone, Krishan, my publisher, incredible.

[00:22:23] She’s incredible. Leah Lackins was my editor and she is an editor. She’s ghost written books before they’ve been on the New York Times bestseller list. She’s a writer and she was key to me finishing this book. She was there with encouragement and cheerleading and zoom calls. And and I, she really held my hand through, Chrishawn did as well.

[00:22:45] And then when, Chrishawn was like, okay, you’re ready to write the book. Leah really stepped in and held my hand through the process of writing which was also again, very new for me. What are you reading right now? Or what did I read while I was writing the book? I [00:23:00] read and reread all of Jasmine Guillory’s books again and again.

[00:23:03] If Jasmine Guillory, pitch to be on the podcast. I love your work. She’s a romance novelist and her work is so good and so juicy to me and I really wanted to be in my frothy reading era because this book was a heavy lift. Okay, what is my favorite book? What’s in my library? Who’s my favorite author?

[00:23:26] Trussie Macmillan Cotton. It’s so good and inspiring to me. I also love Brene Brown’s books. I love Becoming by Michelle Obama. I love the memoir genre. And so those are just a few books that are on my. Who did I first tell when my book sold? I told Chris and we celebrated the shit out of that. I told my parents, I told my brother and I called my closest friends.

[00:23:58] And it was really exciting.[00:24:00] What’s your favorite bookstore, library, book place? I love Books Are Magic in my neighborhood. I love my local bookstore where I grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. A little professor books and I love the library. Especially my home library in Birmingham and in Homewood where I grew up I loved that library and I really want to get and I love the New York City Public Library, the main location with the Lions.

[00:24:29] I used to when I was a matchmaker, I used to go into the library and sit there and work from the beautiful wooden tables under that beautiful mural on the ceiling. And it was so inspirational. What was your relationship to writing and reading as a kid? kid. I used to write in my journal like it was a freaking memoir that millions would read.

[00:24:53] I used to open my journals with Hey, again, I’m so glad that you’re here and that we can talk. [00:25:00] I also, funnily enough, used to do an audio journal when I was a really tiny kid and there were these old like nineties tape recorders. And I had like for kids and I had one, and I used. to record myself talking about the day, like a podcast.

[00:25:16] And I also was very, I had a lot of big feelings and then I would feel embarrassed about those big feelings. And so I would then go back and destroy my journals or un record over the journaling audios because it was just so vulnerable to witness myself. And I don’t think I had the tools to really understand what was happening.

[00:25:37] So I ended up in a fury, just being like, This is terrible! And I think that the direct line can be drawn to my anxiety about, They’re gonna take back my book! And, man, it’s the deal! I’m not gonna be able to write a book! All those things look, I’m human. And I am so excited that the book is out there.

[00:25:54] I’m so excited that I’m hashtag growing and allowing myself to be seen more. [00:26:00] And so the next question, did you ever imagine you’d be a published author one day? Absolutely. I’ve always known that I would be a published author and I always had fear that it wasn’t going to happen or that I wasn’t good enough.

[00:26:11] So I think it’s that both and would the little kid you, what would the little kid you think of your book? I’m going to cry. I think she would think wow, you’re so cool. Wow. You’re so cool. And you’re so big in a. Beautiful way like we get to do this like that’s oh my goodness, I think she would be very excited What would teenager of me think of the book?

[00:26:36] I think she would be in awe of the amount of permission that I give myself To be seen and to talk honestly about what has happened in my life This book is like I have so many personal stories in this book that I’ve never shared on this podcast. And I have so many. Stories that happened to me as a teenager that shaped [00:27:00] my adult love life that I share and I think teenager me would be a little intimidated by that, but also like in awe of the courage that it takes to share and also a little bit of look, you’re doing great.

[00:27:13] I was bullied as a teen, as a young teen. And I get into that in the book. And a lot of that bullying was from like boys that It’s just like all connected, right? All of it is a All of that created the You’re Too Much story, and I think that when I get into that in the book I think that my teenager self would be very proud and nervous, and I’m really hoping to take, I want to take good care of her and my youngest self in the process of releasing this.

[00:27:42] And what would my 20 year old self think? She’d be like, yeah, go. Of course you’re doing this. So exciting. How do I get there faster? I’d be like, how do I get there now? And I just need to tell her like, Lily, like it’s happening. It’s all in progress. What are you most excited about [00:28:00] in relation to my book being out in the world?

[00:28:04] I am excited that people will finally have the. Guide, the tools, the resources to never settle. Ever again in their dating lives and that they will have the guide and support with this book to find the best fucking relationship of their life on their terms. I am excited for people to read this book and to be excited about their dating lives and excited about their love lives, and excited about what’s possible and excited about finding that right person instead of swimming in the hopelessness and discouragement and shrinking that potentially currently is.

[00:28:43] What is the status quo? Who is my book for? My book is for feminist badass humans who are killing it in most aspects of their lives and dating feels like the one place that hasn’t [00:29:00] felt good or fulfilling or successful. It’s for people who are ready to give themselves radical permission to have and to get everything that they want.
